It was indeed an honour to announce the launch of BiotroNiS in Saxony on April 3, 2025 as a specialised network in Saxony with the purpose of bringing research and industry together. The network is a joint venture among three leading research institutions in Dresden, Centre for Applied Research and Technology (ZAFT), Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research (IPF) and Integrated Centre for Applied Physics and Photonic Materials (IAPP), aiming to shed light on the emerging field of bioelectronics and facilitating cooperation and collaboration.
The event took place at Hygiene Museum, beginning with a fascinating presentation by Professor Sahika Inal from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Kaust) on the subject of “Bioelectronic Materials and Systems”. Bioelectronics, the direct connection between living organisms and electronic systems, is one of the most significant and rapidly advancing technological developments today. This development is motivated by promising applications addressing challenges in sustainability and health. A striking demonstration of the potential and relevance of such concepts is the recent implantation of electronic components into the human brain by the company Neuralink.
Subsequently, Professor Karl Leo, a leading figure in the field with major contributions especially in developing Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), introduced BiotroNiS, its goals and the importance of such a daring effort to pay more attention to field. Together with Professor Kathrin Harre and Professor Carsten Werner they have formed a powerhouse to support and guarantee the future of bioelectronics devices in Saxony and this would in turn benefit future researchers and industries to come one step closer towards one another.
The event ended with a casual get-together to provide opportunities for proper networking between academic and industrial partners in Saxony which paved the way for efficient and first-hand communication between both sides.
