From Idea to Intellectual Property: BiotroniS Launches Free Online Training Series with PIZ Dresden
How can scientific discoveries and innovative ideas be effectively protected? What opportunities do patents offer, and what should researchers consider when developing their own inventions? To address these questions, BiotroniS, in collaboration with the Patent Information Centre (PIZ) Dresden, is organizing a six-part online training series titled “From Idea to Intellectual Property”, starting on 11 November 2026.

The series aims to provide researchers and innovators with a practical introduction to intellectual property protection and its importance in transferring scientific discoveries into real-world applications. Participants will explore key aspects of patents, utility models, copyright, trademarks and designs, while gaining insights into the legal frameworks and procedures involved in protecting research results.

A particular focus will be placed on understanding patentability requirements, the patent application process and the handling of inventions developed in a research environment. The programme will also introduce publicly accessible patent, trademark and design databases, along with the advisory and patent search services offered by PIZ Dresden. Each session will consist of a 45-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session, allowing participants to discuss relevant topics directly with experts.

For BiotroniS, the training series represents an important contribution to strengthening knowledge transfer and innovation within its research network. Understanding intellectual property rights is essential not only for protecting scientific achievements but also for identifying opportunities for collaboration, technology transfer and future applications.

The first session will take place on 11 November 2026, from 10:30 to 11:30, introducing PIZ Dresden and its services alongside the fundamentals of patents and utility models. Five additional sessions will follow monthly until April 2027, covering further aspects of intellectual property protection and research-related innovation.

Participation in the online training series is free of charge. Presentations will be delivered in German, with slides provided in English.

Researchers, early-career scientists and other interested participants are warmly invited to join the series and gain valuable insights into protecting and managing intellectual property.
